WANGTEK
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The company was established in 1982, by Ben C. Wang, to design,
manufacture, and distribute a full line of QIC tape drives, controllers
and subsystems to OEMs and the OEM market place. These were designed to
provide storage back-up for Winchester disk drives, it is now however
also used for software distribution, program loading, archival storage
and data acquisition. It was the first to offer a 5.25" QIC in a half
height form factor. Later, in 1989 it extended its product base into
the DAT market, it did this in a timely fashion, being the first to
ship 4mm DAT in production quantities. It employs 542 people ('89), and
maintains a sales revenue of $158,000,000 ('90). Wangtek is a wholly
owned subsidiary of Rexon, and the managers of Rexon, Wangtek & DAT
Products Division Manager together give a well balanced background
orientations - Technical, Marketing & Financial.
TARGET SYSTEMS.
Its strategy now is "To target major OEMs & systems companies to

SUMMARY
As the company entered the QIC market first, and due to this markets
continual growth, Wangtek gains a considerable share of their income
from this, and gained 26% of the market in 1991. However the company
has showed an unblinkered view and entered the DAT market in its
development stage, and so has gained 18% of the market, this shows good
market awareness as now the QIC market has started to decline.
AQUISITION OF WANGDAT BY REXON.
This may affect Wangtek as Wangdat also produce DAT products which
compete directly with them. Greater emphasis will be placed on their
QIC products, and the 4mm activity in Wangtek will move to WangDAT when
the merger is complete.
